Manawolf: 3; Smoke Detector: 2

Well apparently the batteries were last replaced at exactly the same time, because now the one in our BEDROOM has gone off. (I didn't even realize there was one there...)

The lever to the battery compartment, however, was broken on this one, so I will never know if a new battery will fix it or not. Instead, I took it off the wall and stuffed it in a cabinet so that I can GET THE FUCK TO SLEEP.

Manawolf: 2; Smoke Detector: 1

AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAH. It started beeping again. Several smacks later and it won't stop.

Aside from calling the landlord (and aside from bashing it to death with a broom handle), ideas?

EDIT: Smoke detector removed from wall. Now, the wall unit won't stop chirping - and so does the detector, even though it's both removed from the wall AND the batteries are out.

Must... resist... use of hammer...

EDIT 2: I think... THINK... It may have stopped. *cautious sigh of relief*

Manawolf vs. the Smoke Detector - Part II

Hmmm. Well I thought Part I was up on the News section of my site, but I don't see the news section. I don't remember taking it down. Hrm. Well for those who aren't familiar, I'll have to upload it to my LJ.

Because the smoke alarm woke me up again. This time with "chirping." Thing is, we replaced the batteries just a day ago! So I'm all WTF, but I go looking for the other battery in the pack, but I can't figure where it got put.

Well fine, maybe I'll just climb up there and look. It's a fresh freakin' battery, it must not be a problem with that. So I pry out the battery case, shove the battery around a little, and push the case back in.

I remember what mice said about her iPod, not that a smoke detector is an iPod... Still, I gave it a good smack, then waited to see if it would dare beep again.

And waited....

SUCCESS. (If I may be so bold as to potentially jinx myself, as the night ain't over yet.)

But the only problem is... now I'm awake, and I realize I'm awful hungry. A smidgen too hungry to go back to sleep easily.

So that brings me full circle back 'round to here, drinking pineapple juice and nibbling otana's homemade inari in front of the computer at quarter 'till 5 in the morning.

Edit: Thank gawd I don't have to go to work tomorrow. Thank you, President's Day.

I may be addicted to Blanco del Oro grapefruits.

otana: That's OK honey, this is LA. There will be a clinic for it, somewhere.

... I don't need help. I need more yellow grapefruit! :3

Would you believe I did not grow up with a Nintendo in the house?

I don't consider myself a ferocious gamer. But I do rip through them when I find one I like, and I've been told that I'm abnormally tenacious. Series I have consequentially beat the stuffing out of include Ratchet & Clank, Jak & Daxter, and of course Sly Cooper. In which I talk about games! It's OK, no spoilers.Collapse )

Nef update

Nef has been doing well since her cortizone shot. Dr. F was not very receptive to my concerns about her temperament; I figure I will actually make an appointment next time so I can see Dr. B instead of being a walk-in.

Ironically, we ran out of ZD food recently, so I've been giving her the other guys' food - which, at the moment, is something called Solid Gold Katz-N-Flocken. It's one of the least expensive I could find where the primary ingredient was actually some variety of meat, not corn/rice meal. And, just like Fireball's, her fur got SOFT. Dr. F gave me strict instructions to keep her on nothing but ZD, but I was so sick the few days after I took her in that I couldn't get more (and they were out of stock while I was there). It certainly doesn't seem to have hurt, and if her fur's this silky-soft, it can't be bad for her skin, right?

She spent ten minutes this morning laying (not perching, with her pointy, pointy feet) on my chest, purring like a snugglebug while I scratched her head and face. Now, if only we can convince her not to SCREAM whenever she sees another cat, we'll be set.

There are a pair of redtail hawks who live around my work building. The tower's 15 stories tall, and between it, the Promenade shopping center and other high office buildings in the area there are some great clifflike perches and wind currents. I'm always hoping to get a look at one from inside the office while it's perching on the building windowsill.

I just saw one from the lunch room window, and watched as it glided down to a perch on a telephone pole. Soon enough the other came to join, taking two playful, acrobatic, completely pointless loops in the air before going down to it's mate. The other took off, and they circled around each other above the hillside and Sepulveda traffic until they worked their way out of sight.

Raptors are always thrilling to watch, and seeing a (presumably) mated pair playing in the wind put a great spin on lunchtime.

Happy Nude Deer celebrations

I do believe that discovering I am capable of getting completely smashed without falling asleep first (contrary to what I had previously thought) is a good way to kick off the new year. I got awfully fucking sleepy at one point, but I took some time off from my drink with a cup of water. I'm not sure I qualified as awake for the rest of the night, but I was conscious and moving (disclaimer: not in a straight line)!

I do think I'll need a new recipe for mojitos though, as the one I tried to make for mice was a failure (I was working without sugar syrup, but that shouldn't have been a problem as there was plenty of sugar itself). Fortunately otana made her a peach brandy smash so the evening was salvaged.

Evening consisted of picking up nibbles, getting lost on my way to pick up mice (what else is new, I ALWAYS get lost in the Arbor Vitae/La Cienega district), picking up more substantial nibbles & mint for the drinks, silly hats (REQUIRED for the evening), Taiko drums (as played by everyone else, it is so not my sort of game), a peach & apricot brandy smash (mint leaves and brown sugar, peach schnapps, apricot brandy), monkey bread, a dark fuzzy navel (peach schnapps, OJ, blackberry brandy) (this is the drink I had to take a break from to rehydrate), almond! champagne, a broken noisemaker (blow harder!), wussy popper things, a freaked-out Kashini (who probably thought there were balloons involved), and much heckling of the MLP movie. Quite possibly MUCH annoyance of the neighbors but turnabout is fair play, yes?

And I'm pretty sure there was some boob-groping in there too.

Next this year? Much the same as last year - I want to get better organized. Getting more exercise wouldn't hurt. Perhaps taking a closer look at career development - maybe next autumn will be the one I go back to school (if I didn't just jinx myself).

Oh yes, and FINISHING otana'S PANTS.
